Analogy An analogy is a comparison between unlike things pointing out similarities between their attributes. For example, a teacher might compare the human body to a country. In doing so, the teacher could compare the circulatory system in the body to the transportation system in a country (roads, airports, and train stations) by stating, "the circulatory system is to the body as a transportation system is to a country." The teacher could compare the nervous system in the body with the information system in a country (telephones, the Internet, newspapers, etc.) by stating, "the nervous system is to the body as information systems are to a country." The skeletal system could be compared with the economy of a country by stating, "the skeletal system is to the body as the economy is to a country." The teacher could also compare the immune system in the body to the military by stating, "the immune system is to the body as the military is to a country." In each of these analogies, unlike things (the human body and a country) are compared so that students understand relationships by comparing attributes between the concepts.

A heart is like a force pump.

A kidney is like a waste filter.

An eye is like a camera.

Energy levels are like rows in a parking lot.

Holding onto anger is like picking up a hot coal to throw at someone. You’re the one who gets burned.

Metaphor A metaphor is a figure of speech in which a word or phrase, literally denoting one kind of object or idea, is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between the two. In the sentence, "It's raining buckets!" a metaphor is used. The speaker and listener both understand that buckets are not falling from the sky. The metaphor, depicting falling rain as buckets of water, allows the speaker to express the heaviness of the downpour. Without the metaphor, the statement would not express the emotion as vividly.

It's raining buckets!

The teacher gave the students mountains of homework.

The angry father blew his top.

The boy blossomed at his new school.

Simile A simile is also a figure of speech, which compares two unlike things, only it is introduced with like, as, as if, as than, similar to, resembles or seems. In the sentence, "It's as dry as a bone!" a simile is used. The speaker is stating clearly that something happens to be dry, as dry as a bone. The choice between simile or metaphor depends upon each situation.

It's as dry as a bone!

She was as big as a house.

The cookie was as hard as a rock.

Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.

Most routers can automatically determine the best route for information. With older routers, called static routers, a network administrator had to manually configure each route information could take. Newer routers, called dynamic routers, can automatically configure the available routes on the network.

Routers map networks and divide them into individual segments. Each segment is assigned a specific address. The network segment address and the address of the destination computer help the router determine the best route for the information to take through the network.
