Analogies & Metaphors

Instructional Benefits

Researchers contend that students can benefit from analogical and metaphorical reasoning in several ways. These include: understanding concepts, interpreting representations, connecting concepts, improving recall, computing solutions, and detecting and correcting errors. Building on their prior knowledge, students can more easily understand difficult concepts, especially if they involve visual analogies and metaphors.

Research has also shown that moving information from working memory into long-term memory is a big challenge. The best bet for getting information into long-term memory is by making the information meaningful to the learner. Analogies and metaphors have long been used to do just that. By comparing new information to something the learner already knows, the learner is much more likely to understand the new information.
